Teaching in Allentown is the blog wherein Timnah Gretencord, a.k.a. “Dr. G,” advocates for learner-centered, inquiry-driven (or “problem-based”) teaching and shares her own experiments in the field of community college instruction.

The title refers to Billy Joel’s song, “Allentown,” about the struggle of the working class during a depression/recession.

Something to think about:

One cannot expect positive results from an educational or political action program which fails to respect the particular view of the world held by the people. Such a program constitutes cultural invasion, good intentions notwithstanding.

— Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, p. 95
